As a follow-up to yesterday’s post about machine vision’s impact on industrial automation , it’s worth noting that robotics is another emerging field that combines aspects of vision and industrial automation.

Next-generation robotics allow for more complicated and autonomous industrial automation tasks.  Because of the complexity of these tasks, machine vision is necessary to guide the robot’s actions.

Here is a fascinating example:  a robotic dog from Boston Dynamics using machine vision to assess and guide the robot’s footsteps.  The video is cool and eerie at the same time.

As industrial automation technologies advance, the adoption of Robotics will increase.  And machine vision will play a critical role in guiding these highly skilled machines.
