The patriotic Operating System

If you are a country with more than a billion people and you can make an Operating System a national decree, the answer may be yes.

Here is a fascinating article from EETimes, that looks at China’s decision to chose Cononical Linux as the national OS.

This is an extremely shrewd decision to standardize on a single Linux distribution.  Productivity will be maximized because eventually every corporation and individual will be using the same operating system.  Profitability will also be maximized because the OS is royalty free and most likely the applications running on it will be as well.  Having more than a billion users will also insure a health community of contributors to maintain and support Cononical Linux.

What’s next on list for China’s standards committee.  A national car perhaps.
